2. Register with the GDC (General Dental Council) which is the governing body for Dentistry in the UK. You can apply for this at www.gdc-uk.org . You will receive a GDC number which will register you as a Dental Professional in the United Kingdom.

Dependant on where you qualified you may have to do the mandatory GDC Overseas Registration Exam, formerly known as the IQE. You are exempt from this examination if you obtained a recognised qualification from within the EEA.

3. All overseas Dentists EEA qualified or otherwise must complete an English language test, you can find more information at either of the following IELTS www.ielts.org or UBELTS www.bath.ac.uk/ubelt.

4. Obtain your Indemnity Insurance. You can apply for this at one of the following: DDU (Dental Defence Union) at www.the-ddu.com. Or you can also apply through Dental Protection at www.dentalprotection.org/uk.

5. Dependent on your level of experience in your own country or where you qualified, you must also meet additional clinical standards by either completing your VT (Vocational training) to work within an NHS Dental Practice in the UK, which you will be mentored by a VT trainer in preparation to work within the NHS. This usually takes between 6 - 12 months or gain VT Equivalence.

6. Once you have all of the above in place you can now consider whether you wish to work within an NHS practice or within a Private Practice. All EEA Dentists can work within a private practice once they have there GDC and Indemnity Insurance. All Non EEA Dentists must have there GDC, Indemnity and have completed there ORE.Secure an Associates Post in the UK.

7. Any Dentist, UK qualified or otherwise who wishes to work within an NHS practice must obtain a Performer number from the Local PCT (Primary Care Trust). They will require you to show your Indemnity Insurance, GDC certificate and English Language test results. Each PCT is different and it will vary in terms of the documentation they ask from you. Once you have completed your application they will apply for a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check and often references from your University or previous employers. Once you have obtained your Performer number which can take up to 3 months you can now work in the UK within an NHS Practice.

8.Dependent on your UK Residency Status you may also have to contact the home office to secure a work permit. You can do this at either one of these www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk & www.workingintheuk.gov.uk
